This presentation sets out the role of PBL in supporting the STEM curriculum at Skipper Clement’s International Department. Our aim is to emphasise small group self-directed learning around a problem Skipper Clement ninth grade students have chosen to solve related to health and the environment. Although our international science syllabus called the Cambridge International General Certificate of Education (CIE IGCSE) sets out STEM skills learners should acquire, such as an interest in science, the scientific method and its relevance to everyday life, there is no requirement for group project work or the use of problem-solving methodologies. Considering that our students may go into the Danish or international education system at high school level, the experience of PBL via the LabSTEM Nord partnership has provided a vital missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle for a more complete STEM education. The presentation will explore the extent of student learning and motivation over a two-month period, the perceived benefits from students’ and STEM teachers’ perspectives and the challenges faced implementing the project.
