Description

A Book of Changes in Engineering – On Becoming a
Good Engineer in China

By Xi Jin

The thesis is an attempt to respond to the question of what it takes to become a socially responsible engineer – a “good” engineer – within the context of sustainable development.
Specifically, it asks whether or not it is possible to be a socially responsible or “good” engineer in a Chinese nuclear power engineering company, where the author has been working for several years.

It is based on a series of interviews with engineers in the company on their work practice and life experiences and, in particular, their attitudes to engineering and sustainable development.
The findings from the interviews – the “life stories” of the interviewees – are interpreted within a broad range of academic discussions about engineering in relation to sustainable development in the philosophy and sociology of science and technology as well as in economics and technology management. The thesis also provides an introduction to the history of nuclear engineering in China, and, more generally, of Chinese attitudes to science, technology, and the environment.
As such, it offers a contextualized analysis of engineering practice in China that should be of interest to engineers as well as all those concerned with sustainable development.
